WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

Healthcare professionals from across the UK, including members of XR Brighton, gathered outside Downing Street on June 11th to protest against the continued use of government subsidies and licences for fossil fuel producers. The action was organised by Doctors for Extinction Rebellion, Medact, and Health for a Green New Deal. The medics delivered a letter to the prime minister. Fiona Godlee, former editor in chief of The BMJ, said, “Our political leaders are neglecting their duty of care to the young people of this country whose futures are now at risk, so we as health professionals feel morally obliged to protest on their behalf.”

The government itself has said: ‘Health and care professionals should recognise the climate crisis as a health crisis, and therefore climate action as a core part of their professional responsibilities.'

DIGITAL REBELLION

Following our call to take action against HSBC and Standard Chartered's greenwash adverts, we've recently seen very similar promoted content on Twitter from Barclays.

Gotta catch 'em all?

It's worth submitting a quick complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority (the UK ad regulator) here: click here

You can do this as an individual member of the public or as an organisation with a direct interest. (Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages.)

Adfree Cities have submitted this 5000 character summary submission if you want a Template to adapt. Click here

The ASA are very slow. So a quick and simple submission soon is better than waiting several weeks. It's likely they won't do anything until after the final HSBC ruling - estimated to arrive in the next 2 weeks at a guess.

If the ASA do decide to investigate, there will be opportunities to make more detailed submissions later in their process.

OTHER CAMPAIGNS

DIVEST EAST SUSSEX

It’s time for East Sussex County Council to stop investing Brighton and Hove pensions in fossil fuels!

Despite declaring a ‘climate emergency’ over 2½ years ago, East Sussex County Council (ESCC) is still investing local people’s pensions in the giant oil companies – like Shell and BP – that are driving the climate crisis. Brighton and Hove employees provide nearly a third of the money for the fund, but BHCC has no say over where the money is invested.

Avoiding catastrophic climate change requires an immediate stop to all investments in new oil & gas. Yet the world’s 20 largest fossil fuel companies are planning to spend over $930 billion on such projects between now and 2030.

It’s time for ESCC to stop making excuses and divest from fossil fuels.

Join us in Lewes on 12 July to make a BIG NOISE for fossil fuel divestment outside County Hall, on the date of ESCC’s Full Council meeting. Meet 9am outside Lewes station.

Organised by: Divest East Sussex, Eco Action Families Brighton, Lewes Climate Hub, Lewes Green Party, Seaford Environmental Alliance, Transition Town Hastings, Transition Town Lewes, XR Brighton, XR Eastbourne, XR Lewes.
