Extinction Rebellion Brighton Newsletter 3rd July 2020

Turn the heat up: help us lobby for green streets

Since the start of lockdown, we have seen glimpses of a low carbon future for Brighton where people's health and the planet are prioritised. Roads have been closed to help vulnerable people with social distancing, cycle lanes have been created, and pollution levels have dropped.

A vision for a green future has since emerged which can also boost the economic recovery and help reduce anxiety of older and vulnerable people spending time outdoors again. However, short-term vested interests are calling for a return to the old normal of a motor-vehicle dominated environment.

There is currently a petition gathering support to remove the temporary cycle lanes on Old Shoreham Road and another to return Madeira Drive to cars. If you want to help Brighton and Hove achieve its target to be 'carbon neutral' by 2030, please sign and share these counter-petitions. Both petitions will be taken to the full council on 23rd July:

> Make the Old Shoreham Road cycle lane extension permanent and establish a city-wide cycle network
> Keep Madeira Drive Closed For Traffic

The council has opened up a wider consultation on changes to the transport network to help with social distancing.
> Give the Council your views

You can pin/vote your suggested bike lanes on a map of Brighton (Widen My Path) and then share the link to this map with our local ward councillors.

Remember to give court support to our two brave rebels!

Two of our brave Horse Hill rebels are due in court. Let's give them our support. Mags (XR Staines) and Venetia (XR Brighton) appear at Guildford Magistrates Court on 7th July. The hearing is at 3pm, arrive 2:30pm. Bring banners, flags, and love. Wear masks. Bring handwash. 2m social distancing measures.

> Please share the event and spread the word.

Us Lot Brighton Affinity Group 'No Going Back' film

Us Lot, a Brighton XR affinity group, have put together a short film called 'No Going Back' to inspire a transformation in the wake of the pandemic. "It was a truly joint effort to put this together, with our affinity group taking turns as writers, narrators, editors, musicians, and spokespeople."

What next for Brighton XR

The People’s Assembly on 30th June was a great opportunity for Extinction Rebellion Brighton to re-group and re-energise, coming together for a really rich discussion about what we want to achieve and how to get there. Massive thank you to the over 50 rebels and the team of fantastic facilitators who joined us. If you didn't get a chance to take part, there's still time to feed back about 'What next for Brighton XR'! Watch this short presentation and then feed back using the form below by Monday 6 July.  We would love to hear from you!
