WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

APRIL REBELLION

WELL DONE to all the Brighton rebels who took part in the Rebellion. It was the moment when rebels from all over the country came together to make their voices heard.

We marched, we occupied bridges, we took the rebellion to the fossil fuel industry,we had hundreds of conversations with the public.

But the Rebellion isn’t over. There are ongoing actions coming up.

FOSSIL BANKS ACTION

XR members were keeping the pressure up outside Barclays in North Street during the Rebellion.

Barclays are the biggest funder of fossil fuels in Europe. Their AGM is coming up May 4th. Protests are taking place around the country in the lead-up to the AGM. Come and join XR Brighton at Barclays on North Street at 12.00 on Saturday April 30th to make some noise!

WHAT’S NEXT?

MONEY REBELLION AGM SEASON SHUTDOWN

Money Rebellion is taking the fight back to your high-street with something BIG for May.

Every Spring, the finance industry comes together to hold their Annual General Meetings - where they celebrate profits, approve bonuses and churn out greenwash ‘Climate Strategies’.

This year, we're taking mass action with #DefundClimateChaos to disrupt business as usual at their AGMs. We’d love you to join us. Sign Up here:

BarcLIES - UK Wide Action

Barclays AGM is in Manchester on the 4th May. We’re planning a wave of action outside their branches all that week (30th April - 6th May).

Barclays is still no. 1 in Europe for funding deadly fossil fuels - $167 Billion since the Paris Agreement.

Barclays new ‘Climate Strategy’ is so crap it makes their own ‘Net Zero by 2050’’ goal IMPOSSIBLE! During their AGM they will be trying to get shareholder approval for this greenwash.

Join us and register your action, so we can promote it for you:

Looking for ideas for your Barclays actions, check out the 170+ protests up on Sharklays:

People’s AGM - Online Rally:

On 21st April, we will launch our AGM actions together with frontline defenders from around the world. Money Rebellion will be joined by land protectors from #StopTMX and #StopEACOP and will be sharing plans with rebels from across Europe: https://defundclimatechaos.uk/

With Love & Rage, together we will #EndFossilFuelsNow

MAY ELECTIONS

5 May Elections Digital Action: Set Carbon Budgets, Reduce Car Use and End Fossil Fuels

All Council need published Carbon Budgets and Transport Decarbonisation Plans. We will not meet Net Zero without immediate and incremental milestones being set and monitored.

Take part in this digital action to demand your council to commit, implement and monitor yearly reductions of carbon. Transport is our biggest emitting sector and is rising. We cannot go Fossil Fuel Free without transport decarbonisation.

Don't miss this opportunity to explore how we can create connected, caring and resilient communities that are truly democratic.

The course takes you through different aspects of community building - from connecting with people one on one, to running People's Assemblies, which harness the wisdom and power of the community - and spans across eight weeks, covering five in-depth modules.

AD FREE CITIES

We are a network of groups across the UK who are concerned about the impacts of corporate advertising on our health, wellbeing, environment, climate, communities and the local economy. To find out more see https://adfreecities.org.uk/

We would like to contact XR Brighton as we have been working on how advertising is fuelling the climate crisis through greenwashing and by giving highly polluting and damaging companies a social licence to operate.

Initially we have some events coming up that we think your members may be interested in and it would be great if you could share them through your networks:

• Beyond Consumerism conference - London May 14th 2022

This conference is aimed at anyone who wants to create healthy, sustainable cities with thriving public spaces and will bring together residents, health campaigners, artists, climate activists, ad industry workers, academics and planners who are resisting corporate advertising and finding solutions to its dominance over our minds and our culture.

More information to register for a FREE place is here (https://adfreecities.org.uk/conference-2022/) and there is also a social media share pack (https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/1q08XAPu9OClNGauALjwNpO-608OZZRqOhiFZkR5ZwOA/edit) with images etc. to use.

Adblock Coordinator Training Programme - deadline to apply 8th May 2022

This is an opportunity for engaged activists to gain skills in social movement organising to run successful campaigns and build grassroots power in local communities! The FREE programme will include a mix of in-person and online events and we are hoping to encourage a diverse range of people to apply with support provided to attend.

More information and a link to the application form is here (https://adfreecities.org.uk/adblock-coordinator-training-programme/)

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

I am writing to invite you to take part in a research study I am conducting as a psychology student at the University of Sussex, UK, among supporters of Extinction Rebellion, with a specific focus on attitudes surrounding collective action against climate change. You would need to complete an anonymous online survey, which will last approximately 15 minutes. There are no risks involved in this study, and participation is completely voluntary. Would you be interested in participating? If so, please use https://universityofsussex.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_72pDzOa7EoKHqE6 to access the survey.

Thank you in advance.
