WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

NO NEW ROADS

On Saturday Jan 29th, members of Brighton XR travelled to Arundel to support local groups who are opposing a new bypass which would only increase traffic and ruin two villages.

This is all part of the government’s plan to spend £27 billion on roads, a crazy idea when we need to be cutting road pollution.

Local groups on Arundel have come up with an alternative plan, which you can find at www.ArundelAlternative.org Please go to the Highways England A27 Further consultation to reject the Highways England Plan:

DIVESTMENT

BARCLAYS ACTION

Brighton XR took action against fossil fuel investor Barclays Bank in North Street again on Monday Jan 31st..

Four meditators and five others plus Ozzie the dog displayed our two large placards and handed out fliers specifically to customers going into the bank to encourage them to consider what Barclays are doing with their money. Barclays are currently the bank with the biggest investment in fossil fuels in Europe.

NO PENSIONS WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!

Members of XR Brighton joined Divest East Sussex at Brighton Town Hall on Thursday Feb 3rd in an American Revolutionary inspired protest about the ongoing lack of representation for Brighton residents on the East Sussex Pension committee. XR Lewes, XR Hastings and many other groups are also supporting this campaign.

Did you know that almost a third of the funds invested by the East Sussex Pension Fund come from Brighton and Hove Council employees? East Sussex County Council has £74 million pounds invested in fossil fuels through its pension scheme.

WHAT’S NEXT?

APRIL REBELLION

The next Rebellion starts at 10:00 Saturday 9 April in Hyde Park, London

We will gather the movement together in Rebellion using focused and ambitiously creative civil resistance and material disruption. Our strategy identifies multiple strands of activity that must be coordinated. Extinction Rebellion has always been greater than the sum of its parts. This year those parts have a fundamental duty to collaborate, to act together.

What we do in our regions and nations will ultimately determine the success of our Rebellions; what we do here in the UK will act as a powerful accelerator for the rest of the world.

Think of all we have done so far as an experiment, XR paying its dues.

Read the 2022 Strategy here: https://extinctionrebellion.uk/2022/01/23/xr-uk-strategy-2022/

Come along to our Tuesday meetings to see how you can get involved (details at the end of the newsletter).

DIGITAL ACTIONS

Convex Insurance

Convex Insurance are continuing to refuse ruling out providing insurance coverage for the controversial Adani Carmichael coal mine, which will:

Destroy the ancestral lands and waters of the Wangan and Jagalingou people without their consent.

Allow 500 more coal ships to travel through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area every year.

Drain 270 billion litres of Queensland's precious groundwater.

Risk damaging aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin.

Add 4.6 billion tonnes of carbon pollution to our atmosphere.

Ironically, Convex is sponsoring Blue Marine Foundation and the University of Exeter to perform ocean research into climate change, in an attempt to greenwash their image.

Tell Blue Marine Foundation and the University of Exeter: Don't take a penny from Convex until they join 43 other insurers and rule out the Adani Carmichael mine!

NEW YEAR, SAME FOSSIL FOOLS

Standard Chartered coordinates $400 million ‘sustainable’ financing for company building new 12 million-tonne coal terminal…despite pledging ‘Net Zero Emissions by 2050’ StanChart is also lending to a gas processing facility that would light the fuse on a carbon bomb at the scale of 15 coal power plants.

WHAT DO I DO?

We need to call StanChart out for its climate hypocrisy! The bank says it’s ‘net zero by 2050’ but the International Energy Agency (IEA)says net zero means no new fossil fuels. Either the science is wrong, or StanChart is

We have a list of emails of StanChart’s board and senior management. Pick your targets here.

WHAT SHOULD I SAY?

Here’s a suggestion, or write your own. It can be as long or short as you want - the key point is that the IEA says ‘net zero by 2050’ means no new fossil fuels!

OTHER CAMPAIGNS

JUST STOP OIL

Extinction Rebellion co-founder, Roger Hallam, has got together with other activists to launch a new campaign, Just Stop Oil. They are demanding that "the UK government makes a statement that it will immediately halt all future licensing and consents for the exploration, development and production of fossil fuels in the UK." The plan is to recruit at least 1000 people willing to face arrest in a sustained campaign of civil disobedience starting this spring.
