WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

COP 26

Lots of lovely rebels from Brighton travelled to Glasgow for COP. Some cycled, some took an easier option. COP didn’t do nearly enough, but we made our voices heard. This is what someone who had a friend inside the conference had to say.

"(My friend) said that having been to a great many COPs, there had never before been this level of protest and that it shouldn't be underestimated what a difference it had made. The people on the streets who had travelled far and wide to show how much they cared, ensured there was much more media coverage. The media coverage ultimately puts pressure on governments and their negotiators. She felt the gains that were made were influenced by this.

Yes, ultimately cop26 failed but within and outside the zones the temperature changed.

I think so many of those who advocate daily for us, for life on earth, feel they've been shouting into a void, to governments who are utterly invested in business as usual and a population who for the most part don't seem to care. There is a palpable sea change now and in amongst all the doom and gloom that is something to celebrate.""

WHAT’S NEXT?

BRIGHTON BROLLIES

Hit the streets again to highlight the impact of climate change on rainfall and related flooding.

When: Sunday 5th December 3.45 – 5.30/6.00ish

Where: Meet in the Rest Gardens in Dyke Road (opposite St Nicholas Church) to get ready to ready to flash mob around the city centre from 4.00

What: We have XR decorated illuminated brollies, good sounds and a simple performance to capture people’s attention.

Who: ALL WELCOME – we need people to take part with the brollies (please dress in black for this) as well as to support in various ways – leafleting and talking to the public, wheeling the sound system etc as well as people simply there to watch and support and draw the public in. If interested, please Join the Telegram group.

This was great fun last time as well as getting across a serious message – a non spicy and family friendly action.

THIS IS A CLIMATE CRIME SCENE!

A peaceful mass encirclement of County Hall, Lewes

When: Tuesday 7th December

Where: Assemble 8:30am outside Lewes station

More Details Here

East Sussex County Council (ESCC) refuses to divest Brighton & Hove’s local government pension scheme from fossil fuels. It has also refused to endorse the Climate & Ecological Emergency Bill and appears to have done little or nothing to make its ‘target’ of reducing the County’s carbon emissions by 13% a year a reality.

This inaction is nothing less than criminal.

Join Divest East Sussex and XR Lewes on Tuesday 7 December to help declare County Hall a #ClimateCrimeScene by encircling it with climate crime scene tape: https://tinyurl.com/climatecrimescene (7 Dec is the date of ESCC’s next big meeting.)

Please bring something to make a noise (whistles etc…)!
