WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?

BRIGHTON XR LOBBY THE LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE

XR Brighton were out on the streets lobbying Labour Party delegates while they were in Brighton for their annual conference from Saturday until Wednesday. They were making sure the Climate and Ecological Crisis was front of mind and asking Labour why it isn’t backing the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill. Labour members spoken to included Jeremy Corbyn, Anneliese Dodds, and Hilary Benn.

As a local group, it's not often we get a chance to rebel under the nose of a major political party!

MP Peter Kyle is refusing to back the Bill in Parliament. If you live in his constituency (Hove and Portslade), please write to Peter Kyle. This is a link to the letter you can send.

We also had a little help keeping the Emergency on the agenda from our trusty pier banner! Brave rebels returned to the West Pier on Friday morning and sent a message to the Conference that there’s no such thing as business as usual when our house is on fire. Thank you to everyone who made this campaign happen (with a special mention to the guardians of the banner)!

DIVESTMENT NEWS

Please take 2 minutes to tell ESCC: 'sound a death knell for fossil fuels'!

According to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, the latest UN climate report 'is a code red for humanity' that 'must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.'

East Sussex County Council (ESCC) runs Brighton & Hove's local government pension scheme. We now need YOUR help to tell ESCC that it's time for it to help sound this 'death knell' by making a public commitment to divest from fossil fuels.

Please take 2 minutes to email Divest East Sussex's latest question to ESCC by 4pm on Monday 4th October. Full details here

LET’S CULTIVATE A REGENERATIVE COMMUNITY

We’re planting out 200 trees to plant out over the weekend of the 27th-28th of November.

The plan is to create a nature corridor, from Falmer to Castle hill; all you will need is a spade, gloves, and your own drinks and snacks.

If you fancy helping out, please follow this link.
