WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?
BRIGHTON XR LOBBY THE LABOUR PARTY CONFERENCE
XR Brighton were out on the streets lobbying Labour Party delegates while they were in Brighton for their annual conference from Saturday until Wednesday. They were making sure the Climate and Ecological Crisis was front of mind and asking Labour why it isn’t backing the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill. Labour members spoken to included Jeremy Corbyn, Anneliese Dodds, and Hilary Benn.
As a local group, it's not often we get a chance to rebel under the nose of a major political party!
MP Peter Kyle is refusing to back the Bill in Parliament. If you live in his constituency (Hove and Portslade), please write to Peter Kyle. This is a link to the letter you can send.
We also had a little help keeping the Emergency on the agenda from our trusty pier banner! Brave rebels returned to the West Pier on Friday morning and sent a message to the Conference that there’s no such thing as business as usual when our house is on fire. Thank you to everyone who made this campaign happen (with a special mention to the guardians of the banner)!

STAYING IN BRIGHTON DURING COP 26?
The Brighton COP26 coalition is slowly coming together, mainly around organising the biggest possible protest in our city on Saturday 6th November (rally and march assembling 12 noon at The Level, setting off at 1pm) as part of a day of action taking place as the COP26 summit meets in Glasgow.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 13th of October. The Zoom link will be posted on the Telegram group closer to the time.
CYCLE RIDE TO COP26 IN GLASGOW
A 'core group' of cyclists is riding the entire way, over 9 days, riding 60 miles a day, leaving Brighton on 24 Oct and arriving in Glasgow on 1 Nov. If you're interested in joining for a day or want to turn out and cheer them on, then join this chat for all the details.

Please take 2 minutes to tell ESCC: 'sound a death knell for fossil fuels'!
According to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, the latest UN climate report 'is a code red for humanity' that 'must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet.'
East Sussex County Council (ESCC) runs Brighton & Hove's local government pension scheme. We now need YOUR help to tell ESCC that it's time for it to help sound this 'death knell' by making a public commitment to divest from fossil fuels.
Please take 2 minutes to email Divest East Sussex's latest question to ESCC by 4pm on Monday 4th October. Full details here
East Sussex County Council: THIS IS A CLIMATE EMERGENCY!
Two years after declaring a ‘climate emergency’, East Sussex County Council (ESCC) still needs to:
Divest from fossil fuels
Take rapid action to decarbonise the County
Back the Climate & Ecological Emergency Bill
Tuesday 12th October, 9:30-11am, County Hall, Lewes BN7 1UE
Assemble 8:30am outside Lewes station for 9am procession to County Hall
If you want to travel with other people from Brighton, join this group.
LET’S CULTIVATE A REGENERATIVE COMMUNITY
We’re planting out 200 trees to plant out over the weekend of the 27th-28th of November.
The plan is to create a nature corridor, from Falmer to Castle hill; all you will need is a spade, gloves, and your own drinks and snacks.

XR Brighton General Meetings
We are now holding two meetings a week, one online on Tuesdays and one in person on Thursdays. Everyone is welcome. Come, join in, reflect, and plan our way to make a difference and create change. It’s you that makes the difference!
The Tuesday meeting has a new Zoom link, so if you had the old one saved, make sure to update it (updated details above)!
Also, Autumn is here, so our Thursday in person meetings are moving inside. We are still securing a weekly space, so keep an eye on the Broadcast for the latest info.
