WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?
SHOREHAM ROAD CYCLE LANE REMOVAL PROTESTS CONTINUE
Great coverage for the latest action to protest against the removal of the Old Shoreham Road Cycle Lane.
Below is an excerpt from the Argus on Sept 20th. For the full article, click on this link
‘EXTINCTION Rebellion protesters have attempted to block council workers from removing the Old Shoreham Road cycle lane. Parents from Hove, together with members of Extinction Rebellion Brighton, attempted to block workers from removing the Old Shoreham Road cycle lane on Thursday evening.
They rolled out yoga mats and performed yoga exercises in the path of oncoming machinery used to remove road markings. The protesters also obstructed the lane using bicycles on their stands, with Extinction Rebellion flags attached. The activists took action on behalf of local cyclists, young people and school children who want to "address climate change through cycling safely and sustainably to school."They are calling for a permanent cycle lane along Old Shoreham Road to connect parts of the city directly with central Brighton. The blockade was also an expression of solidarity with all those who use the road to travel to work, or who carry out their work by bicycle, and who deserve to feel safe, organisers said.’
We are now holding 2 Meetings a week, one online at 7pm on Tuesdays and one in-person on the Level at 6pm on Thursdays. These are an opportunity to discuss what you would like XR Brighton to be doing, to meet or form your affinity group, and to get involved in actions. Come along and find out what’s happening! Details of how to join the online meeting are at the bottom of this newsletter.

The Global Climate Strike is back!!!
This Friday, September 24th
Encourage your local group to support and join the strikes across the UK.
London at 11am Parliament Square
Glasgow at 11am Kelvingrove Park
Bristol at 11am College Green
And many more, with over 50 across the UK so far
The climate movement is an ecology of groups and we support the strikes, with energy, resource, and solidarity.
XR and the School Strike for Climate movement began in 2018. This past week we have seen evidence that governments around the world are still failing to curb emissions, while reports show more and more young people are feeling terrified about their future. We must take civil disobedience alongside and in support of young people across the world fighting for their future.
