Make The Argus Stick to Their Promise

Make The Argus Stick to Their Promise

On March 6th the Argus quietly mentioned that it is starting its own 'climate change awareness campaign'. Let's make sure we keep them to their promise.

'The challenge that lies ahead over the next ten years simply cannot be underestimated. This exponential crisis threatens the planet and every species that inhabits it. All of us have a responsibility to play a part in the solution, no matter how large or small a contribution we can make. The Argus and our sister titles are uniquely placed to share news from across the country and the world, along with local issues and stories that impact on the challenge ahead, and we know it’s our societal and moral duty to bring to you the facts.'

Protect your Freedom to Protest!!

The government is planning to make important changes to the law that will restrict the right to protest when lockdown restrictions ease.

We oppose this new planned legislation, and instead demand that the National Police Chiefs Council adopts a new Charter for Freedom of Assembly Rights based on International Human Rights standards – or explain why they refuse to do so.

Support the campaign by signing and sharing the petition.

Money Rebellion

On April 1st, XR actions took place outside Barclays branches in Brighton and Hove as part of the nationwide Money Rebellion, to highlight the bank's appalling record on fossil fuel investments.

If you would like to get involved, read on below.

Divestment News

If you are interested in helping to divest East Sussex County Council's pension fund from fossil fuel investments, do join the XR Divest ESCC Support group on Telegram. More details below of upcoming divestment events you might be interested in.

Animal Rebellion

Animal Rebellion is a sister group of XR which was launched during October 2019. We use nonviolent civil disobedience to bring about a transition to a just and sustainable plant-based food system in an attempt to halt mass extinction, alleviate the worst effects of climate breakdown, and ensure justice for animals.

During March this year, Alison Plaumer from Brighton Animal rebellion took a deputation to Brighton and Hove City Council, requesting an increase in plant-based food in schools to at least 2 days per week, and that all council-run events be plant based. It was passed with no opposition, and its implementation is to be discussed at committee in June. A petition was also created to support this move on the council website.
