Extinction Rebellion Brighton Newsletter
11th December 2020
Hungry for action
"If we haven't made the changes required by approximately the year 2030, we will probably set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control. Then we will pass a point of no return which will be catastrophic." "I don't want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire—because it is." - Greta Thunberg
From Friday 11th December, a Brighton rebel will be undertaking a week-long fast outside the council buildings on Church Road, Hove to remind local people that Brighton and Hove Council unanimously declared a climate and biodiversity emergency two years ago. Their response has not matched the urgency and severity of the threat we face. Agriculture needs a stable climate. Be hungry for action now, or face mass global hunger in the decades to come.
Where’s the plan
Brighton and Hove City Council declared a climate emergency 2 years ago but so far have no plan to make us carbon neutral by 2030. During this time the climate emergency has dramatically worsened alongside catastrophic loss of species.
No plan = No actions
We need to hold them to account! This is not acceptable!

Support Our Brave Rebels
Please keep the support coming
Some of our brave Brighton rebels are facing criminal charges for taking non-violent direct action. You can donate to support our brave rebels' legal fights here.
Regen Working Group
The Regen Working Group is welcoming new people. We would like to offer some calming, connecting, inspiring, and nourishing activities to help keep rebels healthy and happy. We need people to help us plan these. If you are interested please get in touch with Nadia on 07387566846 on Telegram or Whatsapp. All welcome!
Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC) Whole Estate Plan (WEP) Consultation: Last Chance!
Saturday 12th December 10-11:30am
Let’s have mass XR Brighton input into BHCC’s Whole Estate Plan! This is an opportunity not to be missed, and spaces are going quickly! This unique ‘green belt’ owned by us is HUGE – over 12,000 acres. It is essential that climate and biodiversity action is at the core of that plan – carbon drawdown in particular. Don’t miss this chance to join the consultation sessions and speak up for the climate and biosphere.
These are some of the things you can do to get involved and also some places where you can find more information:
> You can find the key points to raise here
> More information and book the session here. If they are full, ask for more dates!
Fancy a new volunteering role? Help with this newsletter!
The XR Brighton newsletter team is a small but committed team who draft, edit, and send out this newsletter every week to spread the work of XR Brighton in highlighting the climate emergency.
There is a vacancy for a volunteer to help with sending out the newsletter. You will need to be well organised and able to spare a couple of hours a week on Fridays (or Saturdays sometimes). Some knowledge of HTML is useful. If you are interested, please email xr_brightonmedia@protonmail.com

TED Circle: the race to a zero-emission world starts now
Wednesday 16th December, 7:50-9pm
"If we don't act now on climate change, this coming century may be one of humanity's last" says António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, Guterres urges us to use this moment to rebuild with ambitious climate action in mind and lays out a blueprint for getting companies, governments, and countries to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. "We can only win the race to zero together," he says. "I urge you all to get on board."

Training
Oppression, movement building, and our relationships as activists
Sunday 13th December, 7-10pm
We are members of XR looking at how movements can be divided when oppression goes unaddressed, offering practical tools to heal these divisions which affect our relationships as activists.
This workshop will address the importance of understanding the structural nature of oppression (such as racism, sexism, classism, ableism, etc.), as well as doing personal healing work – both of which are necessary if we are to work together effectively in a united movement.
