Mega-Bash & Big-Event on Whitehawk Hill

12th Jan 2020 10:00 - 15:00

Haybourne Road, Brighton, BN2 5

We will gather, share, work, discuss and celebrate on Whitehawk Hill Nature Reserve, to protest the Council still including it in their City Plan as a development site and to encourage a new vision for all our City Downland sites. The Hill is one of Brighton's most important wildlife and archaeological sites, with a Neolithic camp that predates Stonhenge.

Extinction Rebellion, Friends of Whitehawk Hill and Brighton Downs Alliance (BDA) are linking up for this sister-event to the Saturday march. The 'Mega-Bash' is a larger than usual conservation working party.

Alongside this on the adjacent playing field in Haybourne Road will be a coming-together to gather and record local people’s opinions on the future of local land. With tents, a yurt, music, drumming, info displays, activities and food.

Want to help restore biodiversity of our Downland? See our petition here https://tinyurl.com/restore-wildlife to ask Brighton Council to pause, consult and assess about the future of Hollingbury and Waterhall golf courses. Don't forget to sign it before midnight on the 15th January. Then ask 10 people to do the same!

//

Our huge area of council-owned Downland surrounding the city has several areas (including Hollingbury and Waterhall publicly owned golf courses) and which urgently need to be used for:

ECOLOGICAL-RESTORATION Conserving the internationally rare chalk grassland and ancient gorse ecosystem and its many extraordinary and declining species.

Creation of bio-diverse habitats that assists in carbon draw-down.

COMMUNITY AGRICULTURE – promoting involvement of local food production and land restoration projects which promote food security and democratic control of our food supply.

PUBLIC ACCESS - designate our down-land wherever possible as Statutory Access Land for re connection with nature, and to help protect against future building development
