Bikexercise Carnival

14th Jun 2020 14:00 - 15:00

Hove Park, Old Shoreham Road Entrance

Extinction Rebellion (XR) will be out bikexercising this Sunday 14th June taking a colourful celebratory ride on the new cycleway on the Old Shoreham Road.

Since the coronavirus, an increased number of people are choosing to cycle into the city. To make it safer for cyclists accessing the city from the west, Brighton & Hove Council has recently opened a wide bike lane in both directions on the Old Shoreham Road.

XR welcomes this initiative and is calling on the council to move quickly to open similar lanes throughout the city (like Kingsway), so Brightonians have a healthy, safe and clean alternative to public transport.

XR are also encouraging the council to approve a proposal to make Brighton and Hove a car free city by 2023.

Some 53 people a year die prematurely in Brighton as a result of breathing in toxic pollution in the city centre. Road transport is also responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions in the city than any other sector.

Following the easing of lockdown, the amount of traffic on the roads has soared as residents avoid public transport. City councillors must urgently give locals a clean alternative to driving cars.

Join us near the BTN BikeShare stand at the Shoreham Road entrance to Hove Park at 2pm. We will be cycling west and then east in a loop on the new cycle way with social distancing, sounds and colour. Bring colourful flags and #NoGoingBack bike/transport relevant messages. Fancy dress welcome!

This is exercising with a celebratory spirit and message to our local decision makers, not a protest. Event ends at 3pm.

Extra guidance on starting point: Respect social distancing guidelines for cycling (found here: https://www.cyclinguk.org/article/coronavirus-qa-it-safe-cycle), we recommend at least 5m-10m between family groups, 2m between non-family members in groups. We suggest while relaxing and waiting for the ride to start, to space out in Hove park away from pedestrians and other cyclists.

Important welfare advice for participants:
During the ride, please practice social distancing and note that you are responsible for your own safety.

• This is a peaceful celebration; however, in the unlikely event of encountering an aggressive driver, please don't respond to confrontation, avoid escalation and keep a positive attitude.
• Please observe red lights, maintain a slow pace so you can keep your distance. • Cycle with kids on the inside.
• Wear a mask (obligatory) and helmets, reflective and safety gear
• Don’t forget sunscreen and drinking water
