Signs on the Earth: Islam and the climate crisis

17th Jul 2019 19:00 - 21:30

St Augustine's Church, Brighton

An inclusive evening for change-makers, people of faith, and people of no faith.

This evening’s talk presents a unique opportunity to understand the global climate crisis and solution from one of the world’s leading Muslim environmentalists - Fazlun Khalid.

The talk will challenge prevailing models of development, will draw from the realm of the sacred, and will outline our responsibility in addressing the perils faced by the planet.

The aim of this evening is to simultaneously offer a space for synergy and the building of relationships within and across social groups in Brighton & Hove and beyond. The depth of our connections is a key factor in supporting the transformation that is needed.

STALLS: There will be a stall selling Fazlun’s book, ‘Signs on the Earth: Islam, Modernity and the Climate Crisis’ and education stands from Wisdom In Nature (Islamic Ecology, Permaculture, Facilitation), Brighton Peace and Environment Centre (BPEC) and Extinction Rebellion Brighton (XR).

There will be time for questions, answers and a reflective discussion, as well as a short ritual of chanting (zhikr) with optional participation as a way of grounding ourselves in the space and in ourselves.

The event is open equally to those who see themselves as being on a spiritual path, and those who do not.

About the Speaker:

Fazlun has a worldwide reputation as an advocate of environmental protection rooted in religious traditions and is now recognised as one of 15 leading eco-theologians in the world (Grist magazine, USA 24 July 2000). He was also listed amongst the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan. He founded the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences which is now established as the world’s leading Islamic environmental NGO. He is a member of the UN Task Team on Religion and Development Advisory Council and also a member of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme.

He is the author of 'Signs on the Earth; Islam, Modernity and the Climate Crisis'.
